Francesca Granto

'My thinking for a new brief is both instinctive and systematic. I would like to think that my work is alawyas grounded in an idea. I find purely aesthetic design dull - the real substance is graphic design is in the concepts and how they are communicated'
contemporary graphic design, page 224.

This designer has definatly been inspired by Si Scott with the detail in the typography. Visually, the logo of this project called 'Amora' works very well with the design being carried on to other products such as the condom wrappers and the bag.

As i was in London last year, i came across this 'Amora' sign in the London Underground being advertised.

Si Scott

I love Si Scotts work. His ability to produce the most beautiful typography intrigues me. All his work looks attractive and very pretty. An orange advertisment was also influenced my his work.

Minsky.Com

These books were designed by Richard Minsky. His engaging approach to book design really got my attention. The two design below were based on the the rights protected by the first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States.
This was the 3rd amendment:

"No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law."

This amendment is saying people should have privacy in their own homes. Again the content of the book reflects well on the design of the book. Having the suitcase protecting the content is a very clever way of showing privacy and also the book hidden in the file is also reflecting on this.

This was the 8th amendment:

"Amendment VIII"

"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

The idea of having the book being presented as a convict in jail is very tactile and engaging. With jail bars designed to protect the book, it has been put in a situation which suits the design. Also the choice of having the black and white strips on the cover of the book is stereotyping the image of a 'robber' which works well and also the attention to detail on the jail bars look very effective.

Both ideas are designed in a very visually interesting way and are very engaging. They are not just attractive pieces of work, but they work well with what the designer is trying to communicate.

This was my project. I tried but peoples identitys in the style of a criminal record.

Yorkshire Chemical Demolition Site

Ive just been to the Yorkshire Chemicals Demolition site with my flatmate as she is doing a project on dereliction and derelict houses. Inside i found some graffiti which i really liked and also old signs and codes which were probably left there by the workers. The scene inside looked like something you probably see on a hip-hop artists album cover for example eminem or even the new film 'step up 2' which is a film about street dancing.

'Flueress:Inspiring creativity that blooms'

This was something i did for my cousins new buisness she has opened. She works as a floral decorater and designer. She asked me design her corporate ID for her, leaflet, pricelist and logo to promote her business. She also wanted a contemporary feel to her corporate. I have also added some photo's she took for me from her exhibition which she put up.

Schematic Work

After looking at lots of symbol books. I produced these for my schematic drawing on what i did over the weekend. Check it out, see if you can read it!

Symbols

I like the effect of scaling barcodes and collaging them in the background looks visually intersting. Also adding a red symbol on top of the collage works well with the black and white which really makes the image as a whole stand out.

I found these images in a book called 'Pictograms icons & signs by Rayan Abdullah and Roger Hubner'. The symbols are very engaging and playful and give a very different meaning when put in symbols. These would look very different if they were done by real people and in photographs but i would definiately like to see it.

What is a book?

Dictionary Definition: a written or printed work consisting of pages glued together or sewn together along on one side and bound in covers.

Some designers have produced some very interesting book ideas, here are some examples i have looked at.

This book design was done by Robert Louis Stevenson. His idea of writing on an umbrella looks very interesting visually and the idea of writing on an umbrella also relates to the content of the book.
